Adding Graffiti

Invite the bot

  1. Sign in at the dashboard with Discord.
  2. You will see every server you can manage. Servers without Graffiti show an Invite button.
  3. Choose the server, approve the permissions, and Discord returns you to the dashboard.

Permissions

Graffiti asks for a broad permission set because its modules span moderation, channel management and messaging. If you would rather grant less, you can narrow the bot's role in Discord afterwards but each module needs the permission its job implies:

  • Ban / kick / timeout members — the moderation commands and every automatic punishment.
  • Manage messages — removing flagged links, images and spam.
  • Manage channels — ticket channels and Join-to-Create voice rooms.
  • Manage roles — auto-roles on join.
  • Read message history — the Hall of Fame backfill and transcripts.

A module whose permission is missing will fail quietly for that action and log the failure rather than stopping the rest of the bot.

Which bot answers

Graffiti runs many bot instances at once: the main shared Graffiti bot, plus every custom bot people have set up. Exactly one of them answers in your server, and which one is something you configure — not a race, and nothing to do with which bot you invited first.

  • By default, the main Graffiti bot serves your server. That is every server without a custom bot, and it needs no setup.
  • Set a custom bot up on a Premium server and it is installed there. Once Graffiti routes the server to it, your bot answers and the main bot goes quiet — see Setting Up Your Application.
  • The server goes back to the main bot if your bot stops. Removing it, or Premium coming off the server, hands it back, and your settings are kept either way.

So inviting both the shared Graffiti bot and your own is fine, and is what we recommend. Only one of them ever responds, and the main bot is what keeps your server covered whenever yours is not there.

Confirming it worked

Run /ping in any channel. If Graffiti replies with its latency, the bot is connected and serving your server. It will also now show a Configure button on the dashboard instead of Invite.

Removing Graffiti

Kick the bot from the server as you would any other member. Your settings stay stored, so re-inviting it later restores the configuration you had.
